Do you have a Guinea pig, or cavy, as they are sometimes called? These little guys really make very charming and adorable little pets! But just how does one pamper a Guinea pig? A Conyers, GA vet offers some tips below.
The best way to pamper a Guinea pig is to make sure that he has a roomy, comfortable cage. We recommend getting a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet for one furball. If you have more than one pet, you’ll need a larger cage. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Cavies are very sociable, and are usually much happier with a friend or two to play with and snuggle up to. Consider getting your four-legged pal a roommate. Just be sure to only house same-sex pairs together, as otherwise you could end up with more Guinea pigs than you bargained for!
Like any other pet, cavies love treats! Fruits like apples, bananas, and blueberries shouldn’t be fed daily, but they’re great for the occasional snack. Always research new foods before giving it to your tiny buddy, to make sure it’s safe.
Guinea pigs are both curious and playful, and they need lots of entertainment. You don’t have to spend lots of money here: you can make some great toys out of ordinary household items. For example, cardboard toilet paper tubes can be upcycled into really cute toys. Many wood, wicker, and cardboard items are also fine. Just avoid giving your pint-sized pal anything with sharp edges or small parts. Items covered in varnish, stain, glitter, or dye are also unsafe.
Cozies are basically tiny tents for pocket pet. Guinea pigs love them! You can buy them in stores or online, or you can make your own.
Living in a cage can get dull. Give your cavy regular free time, so he can run and play outside of his cage. Be sure to do some petproofing first: remove or secure anything that could be dangerous, such as small or sharp items, wire and cords, chemicals, and medications. Then, while your little buddy is out and about, spend time with him. Pet him, let him nap on your lap, or show him some cute tricks!
