October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month. We love seeing dogs get second chances! Many of our most beloved and adorable patients were rescued from shelters. Of course, getting a dog is a huge event. You’ll have quite a few things to take care of before bringing Fido home. Read on as a Covington, GA vet lists some things to do before you pick Fido up.
While all of our canine pals have some behavioral traits in common, breed does play a large role in their personalities. If you know what kind of pooch Fido is, do some research about his specific breed.
Dogs are both curious and playful. They also love to eat things. That can make for a dangerous combination! Remove or secure anything that isn’t safe for Fido. This includes things like plastic wrappers and bags; wires and cords; chemicals; medications; and anything small or sharp. Keep things like shoes and purses in closets, and use trashcans and laundry baskets with lids.
Toxic plants are one of the main household hazards for pets. Make sure that your home and yard only contain safe ones. You can find a list at the ASPCA website here.
Fido will need food, toys, treats, dishes, bedding, grooming supplies, a leash, a tie-line, waste baggies, and a collar or harness. Of course, many of these items are breed, age, and size specific. Have your pup picked out before going shopping.
Make sure that your fencing is secure, so Fido can’t dig under it or jump over it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate. If you really want to get that tail going, get your four-legged buddy a doghouse!
A veterinary appointment is definitely on the agenda. You’ll need to make sure Fido is fixed, microchipped, and current on his vaccines and parasite control. A thorough exam is also in order. While you’re there, ask us for specific tips on Fido’s care needs.
Adopting a shelter dog is a wonderful way to find your new canine companion. Giving one lucky pup a new ‘leash’ on life is also something to feel great about! Give yourself a round of ‘applaws!’
