Our Veterinarian

Dr. Beth McElhenny

Dr. Beth McElhenny

Owner, Veterinarian

Dr. Beth McElhenny believes that veterinary medicine is much more than just a career—it’s truly her calling, and it’s all that she’s wanted to do from the time she was six years old. Getting to use her talents, knowledge, and innate compassion in order to better the lives of animals and their owners is the ultimate reward for her! Dr. McElhenny is proud and humbled to serve the area’s pets as the owner and chief veterinarian of Oak Hill Animal Hospital.

A Georgia native, Dr. McElhenny — or Dr. Mac, as many of her clients and staff affectionately call her — began her veterinary journey during her senior year of high school, when she had the opportunity to spend nearly six hours per week shadowing at a local animal hospital. After earning her Associate’s degree in science from a junior college in the mountains of northern Georgia, Dr. McElhenny headed to North Georgia College in Dahlonega to obtain her Bachelor’s degree, supplementing her studies with real-world volunteer experience at a nearby veterinary clinic. Next, she gained acceptance into the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine and moved to Athens to study animal care. After earning her degree, she was offered a job by the veterinarian she had volunteered with back in Dahlonega and gladly accepted.

Dr. Mac worked in various veterinarians’ offices for 20 years before deciding to act on a longtime dream: opening her own practice in order to provide a specific brand of client-centered, compassionate healthcare. She built Oak Hill Animal Hospital from the ground up in 2009 and has been caring for the area’s pets here ever since. All in all, Dr. McElhenny has been a veterinary professional for almost 30 years.

Medically, Dr. McElhenny enjoys exploratory surgery and puzzle-solving via diagnostic work. She’s also fond of education and loves teaching both clients and staff about pet health and behavior one-on-one. Dr. Mac is extremely proud that two of her former interns are currently in the midst of veterinary school themselves

!In her time away from the hospital, Dr. Mac enjoys gardening, reading, practicing yoga, camping, and traveling. She and her husband, Martin, live with eight rescued pets. In addition to five cats who go by Maggie, Olive, Ninah, Oakley, and Nittany, they have a herding-breed dog named Hershey; Petey the boxer/bulldog mix, who was found wandering in the rain right in front of Oak Hill Animal Hospital; and a young pit bull named Miley whose favorite pastime is playing backyard Frisbee.

Donna
Donna

Patient Services Coordinator

After many years spent helping patients in the human healthcare field, Donna wanted to make a change. She’d always wondered what it would be like to work hands-on with animals, and she decided to take a leap of faith! She couldn’t be happier with her choice. Donna is proud to help the area’s pet parents and animal companions as a Patient Services Coordinator.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Donna joined the Oak Hill Animal Hospital team in September of 2019 after transitioning from a job in human emergency medicine. Her favorite part of every shift is the face-to-face interactions with pet owners and their furry, tailed, or scaled companions.

When she’s not at work, Donna likes cheering on the University of Georgia’s football team and doting on her own pets at home. She has three rescued cats — Anastasia, Kudjo, and Kirby — as well as a Yorkie puppy named Little Debbie.

Ashley
Ashley

Lead Veterinary Assistant and Practice Manager

Despite a lifelong love of animals, Ashley didn’t initially set out to work in the veterinary field. In fact, she stumbled into it quite unexpectedly while in between jobs. Fortunately, Dr. Mac saw something in Ashley and decided to take her under her wing, training her from the ground up and supporting and encouraging her growth from an entry-level role to a practice manager. It’s been an incredible journey that continues to this day!

A lifelong lover of the great outdoors, Ashley spent several years with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources — Wildlife Division working with exotics and birds of prey before switching gears and pivoting to veterinary medicine. She joined the Oak Hill team in September of 2011 and hasn’t looked back since! Professionally, Ashley loves the fact that every day brings something new to learn. As she’s moved from veterinary technician to a management role, Ashley has found that sharing her knowledge with new team members gives her a renewed sense of purpose.

Outside of the clinic, Ashley resides with her husband, Mike, and her bonus son, Luke. Together they have quite the zoo, including a gentle German Shepherd named Butch, a goofy Belgian Malinois named Bailey, a blanket-stealing Chihuahua named Poppy, and Walter – Ashley’s heart dog. Most of Ashley’s spare time is spent with family, cheering on her beloved Georgia Bulldogs, or attending Luke’s marching band events.

Julie has been passionate about animal care and grooming ever since she was young — she recalls working on her own family pets’ hairstyles when she was only a teenager. Julie’s ambition never wavered! In total, she’s been grooming for 36 fulfilling years and is proud to serve the area’s pets and animal parents here at Oak Hill Animal Hospital.

Julie is a Georgia native and has been grooming pets locally for the past 20 years. She’s a certified Master Pet Stylist, pet stylist instructor, and a certified behavior specialist, and also serves as a pet dermatological consultant.

In her time away from work, Julie enjoys practicing her photography skills, swimming, horseback riding, and spending time with her family. She has three children and a grandson, and loves going on new adventures with them whenever the opportunity presents itself!

Sandi

Bookkeeper (Himalayan cat pictured)

Sandi has been enjoying the company of pets nearly all her life, so she knows just how valuable animal companions are to the families of the area. She’s thrilled to be able to use her analytical and mathematical skills to improve the lives of others — four- and two-legged — every day! Sandi serves as the clinic’s bookkeeper.

Sandi is originally from Arizona and has been involved with the financial community since her time serving in the United States Army. She further developed her skills by earning a degree in mathematics, and she has served military service members as a tax consultant. Sandi joined the Oak Hill Animal Hospital family in April of 2015 in order to combine her passion for animal care with her knack for numbers, and hasn’t looked back since. Her favorite part of the job is working alongside a team of compassionate animal lovers just like herself!

Sandi and her husband have seven children and six grandchildren. Currently, they live with a rambunctious feline friend named Libby who tends to act more like a dog than a cat. When she isn’t spending quality time with family or enjoying Libby’s antics, Sandi likes staying active in her church community, practicing yoga with her husband, and quilting.

Keke clinic cat
Keke
Clinic Cat – Chief Feline Officer – CFO

Keke grew up somewhere in the state of Georgia. She came to Oak Hill Animal Hospital in January 2020 as an unwanted runaway from a broken home. When her microchip was scanned and her previous owner declined to take her back, Keke officially became the clinic cat and has since been promoted to the prestigious role of CFO (Chief Feline Officer).

When she’s not busy napping or eating, Keke oversees the day-to-day operations of the treatment area, usually from high up on her shelf. Her family consists of her clinic girls and boys. Keke’s hobbies include showing up when the team arrives and seeing them off in the evenings so that she can have her lobby time to sit in the window or the bottom of the door and watch the world pass by.

Christen
Christen

Veterinary Assistant

Growing up in New Jersey, Christen always knew she wanted to work with animals in some capacity, so when the opportunity presented itself for her to join the veterinary field, she jumped at the chance. As a veterinary assistant, Christen is honored to be helping people and their pets in any way she can.

Christen’s journey began right here at Oak Hill Animal Hospital when she joined the team in June of 2023. Professionally, she enjoys being hands-on with patients, interacting with clients, and learning new things every day.

At home, Christen’s family consists of her mother and three nephews. She has several pets of her own, including a goofy English Pointer named Ginger, and five cats: Bandit, Bandger, Oliver, Lucifer, and Shadow. In her spare time, Christen enjoys traveling to new places, visiting Disney, crafting, swimming, bowling, and just chilling with her family.

Jesika
Jesika
Veterinary Assistant / Kennel Team

Jesika has been part of the Oak Hill team since March 2025, bringing with her a lifelong passion for animals. Before joining the clinic, she worked with a professional dog show handler, where she helped manage the kennel and groomed show dogs—especially loving her time with the elegant Afghan Hounds.

As a Veterinary Assistant, Jesika’s days are full of variety. She cares for the boarding pets, ensures their comfort through feeding, cleaning, and bathing, and assists the veterinary team during exams and treatments. She also plays a key role in keeping the clinic clean, stocked, and running smoothly.

What Jesika enjoys most about her work is meeting the wide variety of animals that come through the door and being part of a small clinic where the team already feels like family.

Outside of work, Jesika is a dedicated mom of seven children and seven dogs. She enjoys gardening, cooking (with some culinary training under her belt!), and foraging for wild mushrooms. She also brings a special spark to Mondays at the clinic by celebrating quirky national and international holidays—like National Junk Food Day or Ice Cream Day—to lift team spirits and create joyful moments.

Victoria
Victoria
Receptionist

When Victoria was a child, she recalls having a strong connection with animals. They always seemed to love her as much as she loved them! When her beloved grandmother passed away a few years ago, her legacy inspired Victoria to pursue her passion. Not surprisingly, it was the perfect fit!

Prior to joining the Oak Hill Animal Hospital team, Victoria had been working in human medicine – specifically, the dental industry. After pivoting to the veterinary field, she immediately fell in love with the environment and knew she’d made the right decision.

Victoria lives with her fiancé and their blonde Yorkie mix, Lady. Despite having recently been rescued, Lady has already learned how to sit, lay down, and play fetch. She loves to chew her toys and be cuddled by her humans. In her free time, Victoria enjoys listening to music, reading literature, and writing poetry.

Aaron
Aaron
Kennel Attendant

Growing up in Montana, Aaron has been around animals his whole life, from traditional dogs and cats to farm animals and more. This experience helped shape Aaron’s future career path and led him to pursue a job in the veterinary industry.

Initially, Aaron joined the Oak Hill team as a way to make money, but he immediately fell in love with the work and the knowledge that came with it. He genuinely enjoys looking after and playing with our kennel guests, making sure they are well taken care of.

Outside of work, Aaron has one fur baby of his own: a cat named Garfield, who is quirky, loves to sit on people’s laps, and is very vocal.

Austin B.
Licensed Veterinary Technician

Austin joined our team in August 2024 and brings with her a strong background in veterinary medicine and client education. She holds an associate’s degree in veterinary technology and has experience working in small animal practices, emergency clinics, and even in management roles.

As a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Austin is passionate about overseeing anesthesia during surgery and finds fulfillment in monitoring patients throughout their procedures. She also has a special interest in wound care, enjoying the process of helping pets heal and improve through proper treatment. Recently, she has begun exploring nutritional support, studying how diet and wellness go hand in hand to enhance pets’ overall health.

Austin is Fear Free Certified, helping to reduce stress and anxiety for pets during their visits, and RECOVER CPR certified, giving her critical skills in emergency care situations. One of her proudest accomplishments is achieving her veterinary technician license, which allows her to make an even greater impact in the lives of patients and their families.

Motivated by the opportunity to make a difference for those who cannot advocate for themselves, Austin takes pride in her role not only in patient care but also in educating pet owners to ensure the best outcomes.

Outside of the clinic, Austin enjoys spending her time reading and relaxing with a good book.

Shannon K.
Veterinary Technician / Exotic Guru

With Oak Hill since April 2025.

Shannon brings a wealth of experience and a passion for exotic medicine to the Oak Hill team. A graduate of Gwinnett Technical College with an associate’s degree in veterinary technology, she is also a licensed Registered Veterinary Technician with advanced training in dentistry and a deep background in emergency care.

Before joining Oak Hill, Shannon worked with a wide range of animals at Zoo Atlanta and spent time in both small animal practices and emergency clinics. Her passion for exotic species led her to participate in reptile-related field studies and even coauthor a chapter on snakes in a veterinary technician textbook — a testament to her knowledge and dedication.

At the clinic, Shannon works closely with the doctors to support patient care and treatments, particularly for exotic pets. She finds deep fulfillment in providing gold standard care and seeing how it improves a pet’s quality of life — especially watching young patients grow and thrive over time.

Outside of work, Shannon enjoys traveling with her son and sharing her love of animals with others. For over 15 years, she operated a reptile rescue and used it as a platform to provide educational programs for both children and adults, helping strengthen the human–animal bond through knowledge and compassion.
